Why America’s Government Sucks: The Problem and Impossible Solution
If you were to hear "Congress was bickering today", would it surprise you? Probably not, but it should. We should be able to expect more from our representatives. The term “bicker” should not be something that describes the American government. This is America, for crying out loud. Land of the free, home of the brave. But the people who represent us are cowardly and selfish.
So how did things get so bad? Even though it is so simple to blame the president, the disaster that is the United State’s government is no one person’s fault; not Barack Obama, and not George Bush. The system is broken, and the only way to fix it is for every single American to work together. Congress cannot fix itself. The system is set up wrong. Who decides Congress’s salary? The answer is Congress itself. How does that make sense?
On March 1, 2013 a huge sequester will take effect. This means massive and detrimental budget cuts all over the country. But that was never supposed to happen. The sequester was supposed to be a threat, so that Republicans and Democrats would finally work together on a solution. It is a method used on Kindergarteners; if you don’t come to a compromise then nobody gets anything. It works on children, it doesn’t work in congress.
Because, out of all the cuts ripping apart the nation, not a single penny was to be taken out of Congress’s budget or their personal salaries. So the Democrats didn’t compromise because they hoped the public would blame the Republicans, and Republicans had the same idea.
The difference between the Kindergarteners and Congress is that the kids had something personal at stake, Congress didn’t.
Congress has forgotten that you serve government when you take the job, you do not use government to serve you. To work in government, and for government to work, our representatives are supposed to have a servant’s heart. Most of them don’t. Most of them are just playing politics, trying to make themselves look good, trying to climb up the political ladder.
But some do. Some try. But the thing is, with the current system, there is nothing those few can do to fix anything. Because as a population, we let ourselves be so influenced by public image, and we are so shallow about who and what we listen to.
In order to keep their jobs, Congress needs our votes. But we only give our votes to people who look good, those who have a good PR person to spin stories around them. So even those few who have a servant’s heart, they have to play along with these dirty and stupid political gains, or they won’t be around to do any good. And they have to agree with whatever their party says, because the only way to be in government with any real sway is to pick one. Apparently the American public can’t handle more than two choices.
The American public is lazy, that is the problem with government. The public can’t seem to get off their butts and do some research into who they are voting for, if they even vote at all. The entire voting system has been reduced to “pick a color voting”. And we only let ourselves have two choices.
We can complain all we want, but until the entire population comes together and decides to vote smart, not just pick a color, nothing is going to be done to fix anything. The president can’t do it on his own, and congress is too broken to help itself. We need to demand proper leaders, and then we need to demand that the system is fixed. Congress should not have the power to regulate itself, they should not control their own salaries, they should be willing to risk things like that for the sake of the people they serve.
But the only way any of this can happen is if at least half of the entire population can come together. And if bickering in Congress is bad, it is only a reflection of the hatred and uncompromising atmosphere of the people themselves. The reason the government is broken is that we the people are broken. We are lazy and selfish, great complainers and blamers. If we want to fix this country, if we want to get out of debt, if we want a government focused on serving, not power; then we need to start with ourselves. Millions of people need to look inside and say “Ok, maybe that other group of people I don’t like is doing something wrong, but so am I. I am doing something wrong. Before I can point, blame, and hate, I need to fix myself.”
Because the attitude right now is that whatever is wrong, let’s find someone else to blame. And even those who can see a problem within their own group, justify it by the “Well they do it too” mentality.
If we want America back, each and every one of us must sit down, shut up, and fix it. The truth is the public is why the government sucks. You are the problem, I am the problem, we are the problem. And we are the only solution. God have mercy on us all.
